Weather Report for 2010 by Month

January

January 2010 was a very cold month with an average temperature of only 1.2°C. The dewpoint average was 0.0°C. An air frost was recorded on 18 days. On three days (5th, 9th and 13th) the thermometer stayed below freezing all day.

The highest temperature recorded was 8.0°C on the 17th at 14:44. The minimum temperature was -6.5°C at 06:38 on the 7th.

Precipitation was recorded on 16 days and the rainfall total was 30.8 millimeters, the lowest monthly total since September 2009.

A notable feature was the snow in the first half of the month. Two centimeters fell on the 2nd, with a further five centimeters on the 5th. With the temperature being so low, this snow didn't fully thaw until the 15th.

Winds were light throughout the month, averaging only 3.5 mph. The average gust speed was 5.6 mph. The average wind direction was easterly. The maximum wind speed was 17.3 mph from the east south east at 21:45 on the 19th. The maximum gust speed was 26.4 mph from the south south east at 00:54 on the 16th.

The maximum barometric pressure was 1042.5 millibars at 11:28 on the 26th. The minimum was 990.4 millibars at 05:34 on the 29th. The average barometric pressure for the month was 1014.9 millibars.

February

The final day of February brought to an end 'the coldest Winter for 31 years' according to the Met Office. So, not surprisingly, February 2010 was another very cold month with the average temperature being just 2.1°C. The dewpoint average was 0.8°C and an air frost was recorded on 13 days.

The highest temperature recorded was 8.4°C on the 5th at 15:51, with the lowest temperature being -3.2°C on the 3rd at 05:56.

Precipitation was recorded on all bar three days (1st, 18th and 23rd) with a total of 34.80 millimeters recorded for the month. There was a significant snowfall of some 5 centimeters in the early hours of the 21st which lay on the ground for three days.

Winds were again light throughout the month with an average wind speed of 3.3 mph. The average wind gust was 5.5 mph and the average direction was north north east.

The maximum wind speed was 19.5 mph from the west at 13:12 on the 26th and the maximum gust speed was 27.6 mph, also from the west, at 14:05 on the same day.

The maximum barometric pressure was 1026.5 mb on the 13th at 00:20 with the minimum being 978.5 mb on day 26 at 02:27. The average pressure for the month was 1003.0 mb.

March

March was very much a month of two halves - the first half of the month being dry, with predominantly easterly winds, while the second half was warmer and very wet with the wind direction being westerly / southerly.

The average temperature for the month was 5.7°C, 3.6°C warmer than February. The highest temperature recorded was 14.4°C on the 25th at 13:49, and the lowest temperature was -3.7°C on the 8th at 07:00. The dewpoint average was 2.8°C and an air frost was recorded on 8 days.

Rain, which fell on 15 days, totalled 45.2 millimeters, the highest monthly total since November 2009. The maximum rain per minute was 0.4 millimeters on the 25th at 17:38.

Winds were again reasonably light, with an average speed of 4.6 mph and a maximum wind speed of 20.7 mph from the west at 13:23 on the 28th. The average gust speed was 7.1 mph, with a maximum gust speed of 9.9 mph from the west at 15:44 on the last day of the month. The average wind direction was south westerly.

The maximum barometric pressure was 1035.4 mb on the 7th at 09:06 and the minimum was 978.7 mb on the 31st at 04:48. The average pressure for the month was 1015.0 mb.

April

April was a relatively dry month with only 22.0 millimeters of rain recorded on 11 days. 13.2 millimeters of this rain fell on the last two days of the month with 8.2 millimeters falling on the 30th. Without these two rain days, it would have been a very dry month.

Temperatures were reasonable, with a maximum of 18.7°C recorded at 14:22 on the 28th. The lowest temperature was 0.1°C at 06:33 on the 21st - the only day on which a frost was recorded. The average temperature for the month was 8.8°C, with an average dewpoint of 4.3°C.

Winds were again light, with an average windspeed of 4.1 mph. The average windgust was 6.5 mph and the average wind direction was west south westerly. The maximum wind speed recorded was 18.4 mph from the west north west at 12:49 on the 20th and the maximum gust speed was 27.6 mph from the west at 11:01 on the 1st.

The barometric pressure averaged 1018.5 mb with a maximum of 1034.1 mb on the 10th at 08:12. The minimum pressure recorded was 996.9 mb at 04:36 on the 3rd.

May

May 23rd saw the highest temperature recorded by the station since it was installed in September 2009 when the mercury reached 26.7°C at 17:00. The 23rd was also the warmest day ever recorded when the temperature between 06:00 and 18:00 was no lower than 23.1°C. At the other extreme, the lowest temperature recorded was 0.7°C. at 05:38 on the 13th.

The average temperature for the month was 10.6°C, the warmest since October 2009. The average dewpoint was 6.1°C and the maximum heat index was 26.6°C at 17:29 on the 23rd, another station record.

Rain fell on 12 days and totalled 25.6 mm, slightly higher than April. The maximum rain per minute was a mere 0.2 mm recorded at 23:04 on the 29th. The wettest day was the 8th when 5.4 mm fell.

Winds were light again with an average windspeed of 3.2 mph. with the maximum wind speed being 19.5 mph from the west north west at 11:47 on the 30th. The average gust speed was 5.5 mph and the maximum gust speed was 29.9 mph from the west north west at 13:27 on the 30th.

The barometric pressure averaged 1017.2 mb with the highest being 1032.0 mb recorded at 09:19 on the 21st and the lowest, 1002.6 mb at 19:44 on the 29th.

June

June was a month of two halves with the first half being very wet and the second half almost completely dry. Rain fell on 11 days with 66.0 millimeters of rain falling in the month, all but 0.2 millimeters falling before the 14th.

On the 6th, a phenominal 33.4 millimeters of rain fell during a prolonged thunderstorm in a three hour period in the morning. At 08.16, 1.2 millimeters of rain was recorded - a station record.

Temperatures were good with an average of 15.3°C. The highest temperature was 26.1°C recorded at 15:45 on the 27th. The lowest temperature was 6.0°C at 03:52 on the 20th.

The average dewpoint was 10.6°C and the maximum heat index was 26.7°C at 15:43 on the 27th, beating the station record set in May.

Winds were normal with an average wind speed of 2.7 mph and an average gust speed of 4.8 mph. The highest wind speed recorded was 13.8 mph from the west at 12:30 on the 29th, with a maximum gust speed of 24.1 mph from the north north west at 15:04 on the 19th.

The average barometric pressure for the month was 1017.1 millibars. The highest pressure was 1029.7, set at 13:10 on the 15th, with the lowest pressure being 999.8 millibars at 16:47 on the 8th.

July

July was the warmest month of the year so far, average 16.5°C, despite both May and June having higher temperatures. The highest temperature in the month was 25.6°C recorded at 14:21 on the 10th, with the lowest temperature being 9.5°C at 04:19 on the 6th.

The average dewpoint was 12.4°C and the maximum heat index was 26.4°C at 14:21 on the 10th. The warmest night (6pm - 6am) was 19.2°C on the 11th - a station record.

Rain fell on 15 days during the month with a total of 45.8 millimeters being recorded. On the 14th, a thunderstorm produced 19.2 millimeters of rain. During this storm, at 16:59, 1.8 millimeters of rain was recorded, beating the record rainfall in one minute, set on June 6th.

Winds were light during the month with an average wind speed of 4.5 mph from the west south west, and an average gust speed of 7.2 mph. The maximum wind speed was 18.4 mph from the west south west recorded at 16:51 on the 15th. The maximum gust speed was 29.9 mph from the same direction, also on the 15th, at 16:27.

The highest barometric pressure in the month was 1025.2 millibars at 09:15 on the 6th. The lowest barometric pressure was 994.7 millibars at 04:28 on the 15th. The average pressure for the month was 1013.5 millibars.

August

August was the wettest month of 2010 so far with a total of 67.4 millimeters, 1.4 millimeters more than June, making 2010 a very wet Summer so far. Rain fell on 18 days during the month, with 13.8 millimeters falling on the 23rd.

The average temperature for the month was 14.6°C, with the highest temperature being 23.2°C recorded at 15:30 on the 16th. The lowest temperature was 6.7°C at 04:23 on the 31st.

The average dewpoint was 11.4°C and the maximum heat index was 25.9°C at 18:55 on the 31st. Average humidity was 82%. The dewpoint on the 20th was 18.9°C, a station record.

September

September 2010 was a very wet month, the wettest month of the year so far. Rainfall totalled 70.8 mm, but up to 5 mm of rainfall wasn't recorded due to a dirty rain gauge. Rain fell on 15 days with 13.8 mm falling on the 23rd.

Temperatures were only average with the maximum recorded being 21.4°C at 17:55 on the first day of the month. There were several cool nights with the minimum being 4.6°C recorded at 05:55 on the 25th.

The average temperature was 13.3°C and the average dew point was 10.5°C. The maximum heat index was 26.1°C recorded at 13:57 on the 6th.

Winds were generally normal with an average wind speed of 4.3 mph. The highest wind speed was 21.9 mph at 16:28 on the 6th with the maximum gust speed of 34.5 mph recorded on the same day at 16:05, both from the east south east. The average direction for the month was south westerley.

The highest barometric pressure recorded was 1025.1 mb at 23:57 on the 12th with the lowest being 997.3 mb at 04:38 on the 7th. The average pressure was 1013.4 mb.

October

October 2010 was colder and wetter than 2009. The average temperature for the month was 9.7°C with the maximum being 18.2°C recorded at 15:26 on the 10th. Frost was recorded on two days with the minimum temperature being -0.4°C at 07:20 on the 25th.

The average dewpoint was 7.6°C and the maximum heat index was 24.7°C, recorded at 15:59 on the 10th. The first air frost of the winter was recorded on the 20th when the temperature dropped to -0.2°C at 08:15.

Rainfall for the month was 56.6 mm and rain fell on 17 days. There were 37 mm of rainfall in the first three days of the month.

Winds were fairly light with the average wind speed being 3.9 mph from the south south west. The average gust speed was 6.4 mph, with the strongest gust being 27.6 mph from the south at 18:32 on the 29th. The maximum wind speed was 19.5 mph from the west south west recorded at 19:32, also on the 29th.

November

November 2010 started off mild and wet for the first week or so, but dipped alarmingly during the final week of the month leaving over a foot of snow on the ground as the month ended.

Three inches of snow fell in the early hours of the 27th and continued to fall in showers for the rest of the month. On the 30th, a further nine inches of snow fell up to dawn on December 1st. In places, 13 inches had accumulated.

The warmest temperature recorded was 16.2°C at 13:21 on the 4th with the minimum being a station record of -9.1°C recorded at 08:20 on the 28th. The average temperature for the month was 4.8°C, a full 3°C cooler than 2009.

The average dew point was 3.2°C and there were nine frost days.

Rainfall amounted to 70.8 mm, well down on 2009's record total of 118.8 mm. There were 23 rain days, three fewer than 2009's record of 26. 28.4 mm of rain fell on the 8th.

The maximum wind speed recorded was 24.1 mph from the west south west at 01:52 on the 12th. The maximum gust speed was 39.1 mph, from the same direction at 02:16 on the same day.

The average windspeed for the month was 4.5 mph, with an average gust speed of 7.1 mph.

The average barometric pressure was 1004.6 mb, with the highest being 1020.9 at 10:35 on the 16th and the lowest, a station record 966.9 mb at 16:29 on the 8th.

December

Weather wise, December was a remarkable month that set records which could last for years. The snow which greeted the start of the month hung around for a couple of weeks before thawing for a day or so before more snow arrived just before Christmas.

The month was very cold, dry and winds were very light. The highest temperature recorded was only 8.0°C at 12:34 on the 11th, with the minimum being -11.6°C at 03:26 on the 7th. The coldest temperature beat November's record by 2.5°C.

The average temperature for the month was only -0.2°C, 1.0°C lower than the record set in January 2010. The average dew point was a record low of -1.4°C and there were 20 frost days, also a station record.

Despite all the snow, rainfall was a record low of 15.8 millimeters. There were 17 rain days in the month.

The average wind speed was a mere 1.9 mph, easily the lowest recorded so far. The average gust speed was also a record low of 3.4 mph. The highest wind speed recorded was 17.3 mph from the west at 09:20 on the 16th and the highest gust speed was 26.4 mph, also from the west, at 09:08 on the same day.

The average barometric pressure was 1014.4 mb with the highest being 1037.6 mb at 23:11 on the 14th. The lowest pressure recorded was 990.0 mb at 06:07 on the 18th.
