January

January 2016 continued the run of unseasonally mild temperatures. The average temperature of 5.2°C was 0.2°C higher than the previous January best set in 2014, and 1.6°C higher than the January mean. The maximum recorded temperature was 13.3°C on the 24th at 15:37 and the minimum temperature was -1.6°C on the 16th at 04:07, the lowest temperature since -2.8°C was recorded on November 22nd 2015. The average maximum was 7.5°C, with the average minimum being  2.7°C.

The maximum dew point was 11.8°C at 14:32 on the 24th, with the lowest dew point being -3.7°C on the 14th at 20:39. The monthly average dew point was 3.5°C. 15.08 hours of sunshine was recorded in the month, easily the lowest ever recorded in January, and there were six frost days. The U.V. index peaked at 0.7 on the 29th. The lowest wind chill was -3.5°C at 09:13 on the 17th.

50.0 millimetres of rain was recorded, 27.3 millimetres of that total falling in the first week, making it the wettest start to a year ever at Bracken House. The wettest day was the 7th when 11.6 millimetres fell. Remarkably, the rain fell lightly in the month with the maximum rain rate being 10.4 mm/hr on the 7th at 04:35. The was the lowest maximum rain rate recorded in any month here.

Overnight on the 16th and 17th, a total of 25 millimetres of snow fell, the heaviest snowfall since 40 millimetres was recorded on January 30th 2015, and the first snowfall of 2016.

The maximum wind speed was 22.00 mph at 12:55 on the 27th, with the average wind speed for the month being 6.08 mph (mean 5.1 mph). The maximum gust speed was 35 mph at 07:34 on the 27th, with the monthly average gust speed being 8.7 mph. The average wind direction was 213° and the total wind run was 4423.27 miles.

February

The mild start to 2016 continued into February with above average temperatures being recorded, without any unusually hot days. The average for the month was 4.5°C, compared to the mean of 3.9°C. Rainfall for the month was slightly above average.

The maximum temperature recorded was 13.6°C at 13.33 on the first day of the month, with the minimum being -3.2°C at 06:38 on the 24th. This was the lowest temperature since -3.5°C was recorded on February 2nd 2015. The average daily maximum temperature was 10.8°C and the average daily minimum was 1.4°C.

The maximum dew point was 10.8°C at 14:36 on the 21st. The minimum dew point was -5.0°C at 13:21 on the 25th and the average dew point for the month was 1.8°C. There was 68.84 sunshine hours in the month, with nine frost days. This was the highest sunshine hours total ever recorded here in February. March

March 2016 saw temperatures slightly below average and the wettest March so far recorded here. Winds were lighter than average for the time of year.

The average temperature in the month was 5.3°C, compared to the monthly mean of 5.7°C. The highest temperature recorded was 12.9°C at 15:11 on the 26th, with the lowest temperature being -2.7°C at 02:20 on the 8th. The average daily high of 8.7°C was 0.8°C below the mean of 9.5°C, while the average daily low was 2.1, 0.2°C below the mean.

The high wind chill temperature was 11.7°C, the average was 4.1°C and the low was -3.3°C. The maximum dew point was 10.7°C on the 26th, the low was -4.4°C on the 8th and the average was 2.7°C. Despite a run of 14 consecutive days without any measurable precipitation, March 2016 turned out to be the wettest March on record with 49.2 millimetres being recorded. This beat the previous wettest of 45.2 millimetres set in 2010. The run of dry weather was the longest dry spell since July 2013 when no rain fell for 17 days. The wettest day was the 28th when 14.8 millimetres fell and there were 13 rain days. There was no measurable snow recorded. So far in 2016, there has been 139.4 millimetres of rainfall.

Wind speeds in March were generally lighter than average. The maximum average wind speed was 19 mph on the 28th, with the highest gust speed being 34 mph at 16:31 on the 26th, the average being 35.3 mph. April

April 2016 was a cold month - only April of 2012 being colder. Winds and rainfall were slightly below average and the only snow that fell was towards the end of the month when cold Arctic air brought snow and hail showers, which were quick to disappear.

The average temperature in the month was 6.7°C, 0.2°C higher than in 2012 and 1.7°C below the mean. The maximum temperature was 15.3°C at 15:36 on the 13th. This was the lowest maximum in April, the previous low being 16.3°C in 2012. The minimum temperature was -1.7°C at 05:45 on the 28th. This was the latest date in the year that an air frost has been recorded here. The average daily high temperature was 11.0°C (1.9°C below the mean) with the average daily low temperature being 2.8°C (1.7°C below the mean).

The high wind chill temperature was 15.3°C at 16:36 on the 13th, with the low being -2.8°C at 05:56 on the 29th. The average wind chill for the month was 5.7°C. June 2016 was warmer and wetter than average with winds lighter than usual for the time of year. The first third of the month saw the highest temperatures with the month ending on a cool, wet theme.

The maximum temperature in the month was 24.8°C at 16:36 on the 7th, the highest since 25.2°C was recorded on August 23rd 2015. The lowest temperature was 7.1°C at 01:21 on the 3rd. The average temperature in the month was 14.3°C, 0.4°C above the June average. On the first of the month, the maximum temperature of 11.6°C recorded at 15:29 was the lowest maximum temperature ever recorded here on the first day of June.

August 2016 was a month of above average temperatures and lower than average rainfall, despite over 35 millimetres of rain falling in the last 13 days. Winds were slightly higher than normal for the time of year.

The highest temperature occurred on the 23rd at 17:00, when the thermometer reached 27.2°C, making it the second warmest day of the year, beaten only by the 30.1°C recorded on July 19th. The minimum temperature was 7.6°C recorded at 05:38 on the 9th, and the average for the month was 16.3°C, the highest August average ever recorded here, beating the mean by 0.9°C. The trend for above average temperatures continued into September 2016 which was the hottest so far recorded here. The month was also drier than usual with lighter winds.

The temperature at 16:16 on the 13th reached 28.4°C, beating the previous September best of 27.8°C set on September 30th 2011. This was also the second highest temperature of 2016, beaten only by the 30.1°C recorded on July 19th. The average temperature for the month was 15.3°C, 1.8°C above the mean. The average daily high was 19.5°C, 1.7°C above the mean. At the other end of the scale, the minimum was 7.3°C, the highest minimum so far recorded in September. The average daily low was 11.6°C, 1.8°C above the mean. A run of five consecutive days of above 20°C temperatures between the 5th and the 9th was a first for September. The warmest day was the 13th with an average temperature of 21.08°C, with the coldest day being the 30th with an average of 10.9°C.

The highest heat index was 29.7°C at 15:24 on the 13th, also a September best. The highest dew point was 20.5°C at 16:00 on the 14th, with the average being 12.8°C, again September records. November 2016 was much colder than average, with only November 2010 being cooler. Rainfall and wind speeds were also below average.

This was the second highest pressure ever recorded here, beaten only by the 1044.6 millibars on February 7th 2012. The lowest pressure in the month was 1010.2 millibars at 17:30 on the 23rd, this was the highest minimum pressure in any December.

The highest temperature recorded in the month was 13.3°C at 13:10 on the 8th, with the lowest being -1.8°C at 07:45 on the 5th. The average temperature for the month was 5.9°C, 0.8°C above the mean.
